Other volumes in the EAHMH Evening Lecture Series:

Presented at the EAHMH Conference in Geneva in September 2001, this invited lecture continues the author's exploration of the history of motherhood.

It focuses on the activities of the Wisconsin Bureau of Maternal and Child Health in the early decades of the twentieth century, when public health reformers campaigned to alleviate the alarmingly high death rates of mothers and young children.

While most concerns have so far dealt with urban schemes, what sets this paper apart is Professor Apple's study of the WBMCH's activities in rural areas. By presenting new findings from her ongoing research, it provides a flavour of a forthcoming major new work by the author.

Rima D. Apple is Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, in the School of Human Ecology and the Women's Studies Program, with an appointment in the Department of the History of Medicine. She has published extensively on the women's health history, the history of motherhood, and the history of vitamin supplementation. She is currently studying the relationship between mothers and health-care providers.
