A time comes when you wake up in the morning and say to
yourself that imitation is madness, that trying to be what
you once were is a bummer, that trying to be what you're not
is unworkable and a drag. When you realize that you had
fabulous dreams last night, but can't remember them this
morning. When you realize that no one else can tell you how
to feel good. When you learn once and for all that you have
to lie to those around you, but in your writing be honest,
take what comes to you, give up your hidden ambition of
waking up one morning and finding that you're John Grisham
or Stephen King.
You have vowed many vows to yourself in the past, is
this one likely to last any longer than the others, mere
velleities that didn't survive the insults of the day, that
collapsed under the pressure of your overweening self? The
main duty of a writer such as myself, having attained the
years of what will have to pass for wisdom, since nothing
else is available, and now finding himself on the verge of
the fumbling foolishness of old age, and hoping to have a
little pleasure in his final years, despite finding himself
immersed, seemingly forever, in this wet American city of
Portland, Oregon, this man's duty is to please himself by
any means available. Furthermore, to dare to say this aloud,
as I am doing now. And to follow this up with the following
announcement.
I, Robert Sheckley, am now making available to the
general public my latest novel, DIMENSION OF MIRACLES
REVISITED. This novel has been sold and will be published in
Italy and Russia, two countries who know what good is, but
it won't be published commercially in the United States or
England, due to the fact that I am an invincibly mid-list
author, whose stuff will never please the tastes of the
general American audience and bring profit to my publishers.
For the few who are not totally put off by this, I am
offering this short novel, all 44,000 words of it, together
with two recent short stories, xeroxed and bound into a book
by my local xerox place, with a comb binding with 80 lb
cardboard cover protected by Mylex or Mylar or whatever that
transparent stuff is. The price for this item is $35.00,
payable by check or money order to
Robert Sheckley
733 NE 32nd Avenue
Portland, OR 97232
Upon receipt of your check I will personally inscribe a copy
to you, number the book, sign it, and mail it to you. I must
tell you that about eight people have already ordered this
book, so order, now don't get lost in the rush. I can assure
you that the meagre profit from your book will go to buy me
a nice lunch, or paper, or an ink jet cartridge. If you have
any questions, you can address your email to me at
rsheckley@aol.com. Or you can visit my website at
robertsheckley.com, presently under construction.
