PJL Press Presents

UNHINGED RESURRECTION

The most incredible comeback since Lt. Ripley or possibly even Bobby Ewing!

The magazine for discerning adults has returned from the small press graveyard! Cloned and electronically engineered, UNHINGED Online is leaner, meaner, smarter than the original printed version and currently enjoying a new lease of virtual life!

The debut issue contains disturbing fiction by T.M. Gray, Stephen Winch, Ray Clark, Staci Layne Wilson and Joe Rattigan.

Plus artwork by Dave Fode, Des Knight, Bob Covington Russell Dickerson and Gillian Holmes.

And reviews - Penny Dreadful #13 by Peter Tennant, Songs of Innocence #6 by Peter Tennant, Cold Storage by Paul Lockey and Not A Chance by Paul Bradshaw.

UNHINGED Online
Issue #1: May 2001

Now showing on a computer screen near you!

13 is a magazine dedicated to the publication of original "dark fiction" from all genres, including crime, science fiction and horror, which has not been previously published. We require First British Serial Rights, though copyright of course remains with the author.

We intend to be as flexible as possible in our approach and the editorial direction the magazine will take will depend largely on what is submitted and the feedback we hopefully receive from our readers, though we are hoping to include a good mix of material rather than just concentrating, for example, on the horror end of the market.

We are interested mainly in originality and strong storytelling and characters that we can care about and, although we are not laying down specific guidelines for use of sex and violence, anything that either of us consider gratuitous or too explicit or that makes us just plain uncomfortable will be bounced.

Our requirements as to length will be anything from 2000-7000 words, but we will also welcome short sharp stories of under 1000 words if we think they have something to say. Sorry, we can't handle poetry.

Please send only one story at a time and don't send re-writes unless specifically requested.

Print double spaced on one side only. Don't right justify, do use a spell check! And please include return postage or mark the MS clearly as disposable.

Don't send your only copy!

Submissions will be accepted on disk, preferably in Word format or RTF. We can convert other formats but it's more work! We can't handle Apple Mac diskettes as Macs are, frankly, unknown territory.

Mark the first sheet of your story with your name and address and a word count. Please also number all pages.

Overseas submissions are welcome, but please enclose IRCs for reply and we recommend that you send disposable MS as this is cheaper for all concerned.

Illustrations for stories will be commissioned and we invite artists to send samples for consideration - B&W only. Don't send originals! A good photocopy or scanned image is fine in the first instance, either a hard copy or on disk.

If your submission gets past one of us then it will be passed to the second editor for consideration. Editorial decision is final. We will be using a tick box form rejection sheet, which we hope will be useful and will also endeavour to add comments as appropriate.

We can offer no payment at the moment, other than a copy of the magazine, but do undertake to promote the magazine as widely as possible to ensure maximum exposure of work - and an increasing number of writers now published by mainstream companies started out in the small press, so it is worth the effort.

We aim to reply to submissions within two months but occasionally circumstances beyond our control will prevent this. If enquiring about the status of a MS, please either do so by email or send an SAE. We accept no liability for lost or damaged manuscripts, whatever the cause.

The first issue of 13 will be released on June 22nd and will cost £3.25 including postage.

All submissions and queries to The Editor at:

Because of rising costs and lack of funding I have had to re-appraise the pricing structure for both ROADWORKS and LEGEND.

Both magazines are of a very high quality in terms of content and production values, and this is something I want to maintain. At present the magazines are costing more per issue to produce than the cover price. This is clearly a situation I cannot tolerate financially and is, I believe, one of the main reasons why so many small press magazines ultimately fail.

I think you will agree that, even with the increase in price, both magazines offer very good value for money. I'm hoping that you will continue to support them in the future.

The new prices for current subscribers will not take effect until these subscriptions become due for renewal.

ROADWORKS:

This magazine will appear BI-ANNUALLY (Summer and Winter) rather than quarterly. That means that the next issue (#12) will appear in Summer 2001.

Prices(from issue #12 onwards)will be:
Single issue - £5.00 ($8.00 US) (£6.00 Europe) (£6.50 RoW).
2 Issue subscription (one year) - £9.50 ($15.00 US) (£11.50 Europe) (12.50 RoW).

ROADWORKS will close to unsolicited submissions at the end of April until the current backlog of stories has been reduced.

LEGEND:

This magazine will continue to appear quarterly.

Prices (from issue #3 onwards)will be:
Single issue - £4.00 ($8.00 US) (£5.50 Europe) (£6.00 RoW).
4 Issue subscription (one year) - £15.00 ($30.00 US) (£20.00 Europe) (£22.00 RoW).

LEGEND will remain open to unsolicited submissions. Please study at least one issue before submitting. Guidelines are available upon request. Please include an SAE.

A big thankyou to everyone who has supported the magazines so far. I sincerely hope you will continue to do so - because it's you that make the difference.
All the best,

Trevor Denyer
