CASHIERS DU CINEMART RECIEVES BIG TIME KUDOS
Mike White's zine keeps aiming higher, and by jingo keeps hitting the mark. No. 9 is the
most ambitious effort to date, with a glossy cover, and a polished layout.
This one's got a lengthy take on Star Wars, much of which will be of interest only to people
into it. Exceptions, though, are White's wonderful piece on the delirious Turkish Star Wars,
including "manipulated" action figures; a look at the Golden Era porn rip Sex Wars (what-no Star
Babe?); and a peak at some of the odd short films (including Troops, of course) that Star Wars
has inspired.
Also of note is a wrap-up of Baltimore's excellent Micro Cine Fest, a terrific piece on The Big
Crimewave (which sounds like a neglected gem, and immediately became a film I'm officially
looking for), and a funny and charming narrative from The Scaredy Cat Stalker (an online zine
worth checking out).
White does reviews, too, and the subjects of these will surprise sometimes--his takes on
Entertainment Weakly, X PosŽ, and Fright X are worth the look alone--and his book reviews are
sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.
The best piece in the whole thing would have been White's bitch-slap of Vanity Fair for its
error-strewn article on a topic near and dear to White's heart, scuzz cinema (with a mention of the
Reservoir Dogs/City on Fire nexus). I said "would have" because his review of the new They Might
Be Giants CD has to be one of the most convoluted, tortured tales of junior high romance I've ever
read--complete with yearbook photos, too!
Basically, the best thing about CdC (among many good things) is that White lets lots of
humor and personality shine through, amid all the skewed views and solid info. At $2.50, it's a
steal.

IS CASHIERS DU CINEMART BIGGER THAN JESUS? NO...GOD!
Cashiers du Cinemart #9: I saw an issue of CdC a few years ago, and thought it was terrific.
This issue is twenty times better. Itās a fabulous, lovingly-written and gorgeously put-together
mega-zine of movies. Page after page of excellent articles on the hidden and public histories of
Star Wars, including alternate cuts, TV specials, Mad Magazine parodies, toy merchandising,
porn rip-offs, foreign film rip-offs, Hardware Wars, Phantom Menace, etc. Thereās enough Star
Wars material here to fill five typical movie zines, but thatās barely 1/3 of CdC. Thereās also Indiana
Jones sequel scuttlebutt, a brilliant reconsideration and demotion of moviemaking ex-genius
Francis Ford Coppola, the story behind that crappy, amateur Kurt & Courtney documentary, plus
zine, book, movie, and music reviews, and the inside scoop on Krista Scaredy-Cat Stalker
Garciaās big date with her forever crush, Henry Thomas. Jesus Fuck! I spent four hours reading
this. Cashiers du Cinemart is not Godlike; that would be insulting to this zine, because God just
doesnāt measure up.

÷ Wendy from Zine World

OTHER KIND WORDS...
The Detroit zine Cashiers du Cinemart recently published a fat 64 page issue replete with
articles in a frenzy over the arrival of the fourth Star Wars movie. Features include a report on the
bizarre Turkish take-off on Star Wars, Dunyaya Kurtaran Adam, which can be loosely translated
to mean "The Man Who Saved The World". (Comes complete with "StarsWar" action figures.)
Thereās also a lengthy, elaborate discussion detailing the many different versions and "cuts" of the
original Star Wars trilogy that are rumoured to exist. But what makes this zine notable is its
inclusion of a bevy of "Star Wars Memories". In these columns, twenty-somethings recount their
formative encounters with Luke, Han, Leah and the truculent Chewie. One writer talks about a
miraculous moment at the drive-in: "Slathered in insect repellent and wrapped in my favourite quilt
I waited. After the opening text scrolled up...a huge spaceship cut through the stars and sailed
across the heavens. I knew my world had been invaded and would never be the same."

- Hal Niedzviecki from Broken Pencil

Packed full of useful and fun information. Anyone looking for info about Independent and
Hollywooden Cinema should definitely check this out. A joy to look through.

ö Posse Ultraismo

Looks at films with a unique perspective. Thereās a uniquely anarchistic slant to the zine and
plenty of energy. More people should be reading this. One of the best. This is the magazine Film
Threat wishes it were.

ö Factsheet Five

One of the best zines about movies and the people who make them. It focuses on
independent, cult, foreign and obscure films and the editor, Mike White, is a veritable
encyclopedia of cinematic knowledge.

And Gorezone Covers 11, 12, 17, 19-23, 25, 26.

For those of you who recently submitted material, I will be reading all submissions starting this weekend. I will be contacting all who submitted material within the next 2 weeks. Thanks to everyone who submitted their work.

Scare Ya Later,

Churchyard Keeper

PS "HAUNTING", "DEEP BLUE SEA" and "BLAIR WITCH" seem to be dominating the theaters. And this week "SIXTH SENSE" will hit the theaters. Looks as if the genre and alive and kicking major ass.
